Protein or moisture? Read the snap test before you buy another product
Crunchy hair is not automatically dry hair. One strand of shed hair tells you which one you are actually dealing with.
Two failures that look the same
Hair that snaps, feels stiff and has no give is usually blamed on dryness. Sometimes it is the opposite: too much protein and not enough water. Both look brittle, both feel rough, and they need opposite fixes.
The snap test
Do this on a strand you have already shed — never pull one out.
- Wet the strand.
- Hold it at both ends and stretch slowly.
- Let go.
The three results
- Snaps immediately, no stretch: too little moisture, or too much protein. The strand has no elasticity left.
- Stretches far and does not spring back: too much moisture, not enough protein. The strand is limp and mushy.
- Stretches a little, then springs back: balanced. Keep doing what you are doing.
If it snaps with no stretch
Stop the protein step for a month. Wash with a gentle cleanser, use a water-based leave-in, seal the ends with a light oil, and keep the hair in low-tension styles. Protein masks every wash will make this worse, not better.
If it stretches and stays stretched
Add one light protein step every second wash — a rice water or hydrolysed protein mask, ten minutes, rinsed. Follow it with moisture. Do not stack a protein mask and a protein leave-in on the same day.
What this means for shopping
A product cannot fix a balance problem on its own. Buy for the step you are missing: moisture products where the strand snaps, protein where it stretches. If your hair is balanced, buy the simplest water-based product and spend the difference on a trim.
Put it to use on your own hair.
