Transitioning Loose Afro
Two textures, one routine.
Relaxer or heat damage is being grown out. The line of demarcation is the weak point — this module holds both textures without snapping at the boundary.
The routine
- 1
Detangle in two passes
Fingers first through the new growth, then a wide-tooth comb through the straight ends. Never the other way round.
- 2
Protein, then moisture
A light protein treatment every four to six weeks to hold the boundary — moisture after it, every wash.
- 3
Trim on a schedule
Dust the straight ends every six to eight weeks. A split there travels upward into healthy hair.
- 4
Low-manipulation styling
Two-strand and flat twists keep both textures from being combed daily.
Timing
Plan the trim into your calendar. Transitioning without trims is not transitioning — it is hiding.
Keep
- — Protein treatment every four to six weeks
- — Leave-in plus oil on damp hair
- — Heat-free stretching — banding or twists
Drop
- — Relaxer touch-ups on “just the ends”
- — Daily combing through the boundary
- — Flat irons above 200°C to blend the textures
